Be inspired by Dulux Colour of the Year 2025: True Joy
A monthly colour montage to inspire your home
For over 20 years, the colour experts at Dulux have been translating Global trends into a Colour of the Year that captures the mood of the moment.
This week marked an important date for many interior lovers as Dulux announced Colour of the Year 2025. This will be closely followed by Benjamin Moore in October and Pantone, often with their controversial choice, in December.
With that in mind, it made absolute sense to share this months colour montage centred around the tones of yellow, in relation to True Joy, which is described as:
“An uplifting yellow that fills our homes with optimism, pride and a pop of colour.”
If you’re new to The Stylish Home, welcome!
I’ve recently started sharing monthly colour montages here on Substack, which I used to post on Instagram.
Last month I shared my first instalment, and the feedback received from you all was very encouraging. So I’m going to continue my monthly colour montages as a regular feature.
If you missed the first instalment you can catch up here:
I plan to share a detailed post on how to use Dulux Colour of the Year: True Joy at the end of the month. We’re off on holiday today, so I’m planning a week off to completely switch off and recharge. (I hope you’ll forgive me for not sharing a post next week).
I’ll apologies now, yellow is just not my go-to colour. I’m not a huge fan when it comes to the garden, (with the exception of sunflowers), I don’t believe I’ve ever owned an item of yellow clothing and certainly not when it comes to interior design; I find it’s a really tricky colour to work with.
So why would Dulux have chosen this shade for their Colour of the Year?
Well, yellow is linked with lots of benefits. Being associated with the sun, it stands for optimism, joy and happiness. However, on the flip-side too much yellow can overstimulate the mind, leading to nervous agitation and tension. Bright yellows can even have a negative association linked with deceit and dishonesty, so it’s all about choosing the right tone of yellow for your home.

With that in mind I’ve focussed on combining yellow with softer, neutral tones, which I think work really effectively, adding an element of bright, sunshine fun to our interiors, without being too overpowering.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
01.
You don’t have to go “all-out” with a bright, bold yellow decorated room. Choosing furniture and accessories is a great way to add an element of colour. As you can see from this image by Timur Mitin this golden, almost mustard-toned yellow works so effectively with the calm, neutral tones of the rest of the room.
02.
This elegant, timeless wall-covering “Amelia” features fine detailing that can be enhanced with colour to great effect. As you can see from this photo, it’s been painted in a burst of sunshine yellow.
03.
This image demonstrates how well yellow can work alongside more neutral tones, such as warm, rich browns and slightly grey-toned whites.
04.
Who says you can only use wallpaper or paint to add the “wow” factor when decorating your home?
I love what Stefo Rotolo has done in this space, by tiling the entire floor in a bright, vibrant yellow and adding a feature around the fire surround.
Combined with the neutral walls this vibrant yellow works so well together.

Going bold with a deep-yellow rendered ceiling and feature wall, alongside a calm, neutral colour palette, the Cherry Creek Aesop store demonstrates perfectly how well this colour combination works together.

The Interior Work showcases perfectly how well the golden yellow feature wall complements the richness of varying brown tones.
07.
Mixing things up with my next image.
Combining varying tones of yellow, from ochre to deep yellow and lemon, with hints of lilac, light pinks and white; this artwork by Dirkie Nell shows how versatile the colour yellow can be, when used with the right, complementary colours.

For my last image, I should include an image from Dulux showcasing their Colour of the Year 2025: True Joy.
This uplifting yellow has been created to fill homes with creative energy, optimism and pride. As you can see from it works brilliantly on its own as a statement colour alongside a neutral colour palette.
That concludes this months colour montage. I hope you’ve enjoyed it, and I’ve been able to showcase how you can use yellow tones in your home without it being too overpowering.

As I mentioned, I’ll be taking a break from sharing a post next week, in order to fully switch off and recharge.
