The Bathroom Diaries: Week 12
Garage ceiling installation, vanity unit piping, and finally a tile delivery!
Even though not a huge amount has been happening in the bathroom while we’ve patiently been waiting for the delivery of the remaining tiles from Italy; the other half has been very busy finishing off the garage ceiling.
To recap from my last post, insulation was added in between all the joists.
Thursday 16th January
The rest of the ceiling has now been completely covered with insulation sheets, which has really helped make the bathroom feel a lot warmer.

Friday 17th January
It’s then been boarded using fireboard, which sounds so simple; unless you’re assisting the other half, having to balance 30kg above your head, and not quite having arms long enough to hold in position, even when your using a sheet of insulation as thick as a pair of 90’s Spice Girls platforms to make you a few inches taller!
There were certainly some raised voices and choice words!
Fireboard is used as it gives extra fire protection (by an extra half an hour, compared to using standard plasterboard), which is also a requirement from building control.
Talking about building control, we’ve also had the penultimate sign-off, which is good news. The next (and final) sign-off will be when the bathroom is actually complete.
Sunday 19th January
The ceiling in the garage has been plastered, and I can see the transformation of the garage being almost as big a project as the bathroom; certainly as far as the other half is concerned.

The garage is very much the other half’s space, and being without his garage for over four months, he’s looking forward to getting everything back and arranged, including a whole new workbench which he’s constructing.
I won’t bore you with the redevelopment of the garage (unless you are interested), but we now have a beautifully painted garage ceiling.
For anyone that is wondering why we still have a gap at the front of the ceiling, we’re planning to have a new electric garage door installed, and the other half will finish the ceiling once this has been fitted.
So back to the bathroom.
Tuesday 28th January
The email I’d been waiting for…confirmation the remaining tiles were ready to be collected!
I was delighted when the other half arrived home with these beauties in the back of his van.
Now we just need to find out when out bathroom fitter has some time to fit us in to get the bathroom finished once and for all.
Wednesday 29th January
Some good news; our bathroom fitter popped in this afternoon to install the pipework and arrange the plumbing for the vanity unit.

That’s all the plumbing now completed, and it’s just a case of getting everything installed and connected.
Which is where the bad news kicks in, as our bathroom fitter is back-to-back with current jobs, and the earliest he’s gong to be able to get back to us (pending if his week goes to plan) is next weekend!
So close, yet so far from getting the bathroom complete, although I keep telling myself it will be worth the wait. I’m just desperate to have the shower plumbed in and the luxury of a toilet upstairs.
As a woman of a certain age, I occasionally find myself waking up in the early hours. Navigating my way down the stairs, without waking the dogs (who will undoubtedly assume it’s breakfast time) is far from my idea of fun.
So, having a toilet back in the bathroom can’t come soon enough.
Friday 31st February
The wall where the vanity unit is going to be positioned has been made good.
The other half has filled the chasers with a combination of plasterboard and bonding plaster.

As most of this wall is being tiled, it can be left as it is; although the small section to the right, where the vanity unit comes up to, will need to have some easy-fill applied, sanded down, and a final coat of paint.
The area where the soil stack is has now been fully boxed in; we also decided to pack this out with the leftover insulation we had to maximise keeping the bathroom as warm as possible.
When the bathroom fitter is able to fit us in, the wall is now ready for him to add the tiles and arrange for vanity unit to be put up.
I’m sure it’s not going to be quite as simple as that, as the sink itself weighs 24kg. However, it is an absolute thing of beauty, and I can’t wait to share images with you.
With that in mind, it’s unlikely they’ll be an edition of The Bathroom Diaries next week. Hopefully I’ll have more to share the following week.
